First summer off as a teacher
Well, I’ve just finished my first short stint as a teacher. The experience was wonderful. I’ve been working at the same school I did my practicum and also the same one I attended in Junior High – how cool is that?
I worked with some terrific staff and students for an eight week placement. What a great way to get my feet wet and become more confident as a new teacher. It was nice to ‘land’ in a school where I had tremendous support and already knew many of the staff and students. I could really focus on learning to be a better teacher without being so concerned about the periphery of learning about the geography of the school, staff, and student names.
My contract has been settled for the fall so I’ll be teaching in a different school. From first glance this will be an excellent opportunity to work in a new school as a learning and literacy teacher. I’ve been working with highly gifted young people thus far, now I’ll be working with students that have challenges in their ability to communicate and learn – should be interesting.
One of the perks – summer off. I now have 8 weeks to unwind, enjoy myself and wash away the residue of the university experience. I must say, contrary to what many have suggested, the education program has prepared me quite well to begin my new career. Now, holidays….
Fiona and I will be embarking on a Western Canada journey by motorcycle. Stay tuned for updates.
