800 kilometres and wet underwear

made a trip to saskatoon last weekend. roughly 800 kilometres by the route i chose.  one always hopes for good weather when travelling, unfortunately, that’s not always what you get when you actually go.

it was a harrowing journey of high winds, torrential if not biblical rains, and some of the worst roads i’ve seen or ridden on. to an albertan, secondary highway means passable smaller two lane roads. apparently in saskatchewan a secondary road can be - missing large sections of pavement, 20 centimetre grooves in road, large apple-sized rocks and unmarked areas of construction containing sand and gravel.

needless to say the initial trip there was less than enjoyable and instead of 6 hours it took over 11 hours.

to add insult to injury it rained from the minute i left calgary at 1pm until my arrival at 11pm in saskatoon. when i arrived every square centimetre of my person was soaked. my boots even had about an inch of water inside of them. generally what i would describe as unpleasant. nothing worse than sitting in your own crotch rot for hours at a time.

the most ‘exciting’ portion of the journey was travelling at between 130-140 km/hr only to hit a patch of ‘construction’ and 5 inches of sand and gravel and nearly wipe out my motorcycle. here’s a tip to the road crews in sask. - signs and warnings are a good idea, especially at night or in poor visibility – it’s nice to know when death’s boney finger will tap you on the shoulder. at least if it did tap i’d have been prepared, instead of using my boots and feet as landing pontoons like a seaplane. perty scary.

i must say that once i arrived i had a great trip to waskesiu lake in northern saskatchewan. apparently the only really curvy road in sasakatchewan according to my faithful guide – “radar”. great trip, great weather.

in total the return trip was a hair under 2000 kilometres in 3 days of riding. i must say that the worst day of riding is always better than the best day of work. oh, the stories you can tell…
