first real ride of the year

well, after intermittent weeks of snow and relatively nice weather, this weekend has been beautiful. still cool on the highway but nice enough to go for a short spin.

it’s my ’short loop’ ride. highway 8 to highway 22 across to cochrane and back to the city. it’s about 75 kilometres return.

there’s lots of salt on the highways so getting behind big trucks stirs it up and gets me all teary and salty breathed. came back with salty bits in the corner of my eyes. a little bit of gravel here and there but nothing of any real concern.

it was about 2 celcius (riding temperature) so i got to test out the new riding boots. they are fantastic, keep my feet warm and provide a lot more support - no more sore insteps on my next 10-12 hour ride.

i also changed my stock windscreen to a zero gravity touring screen. with earplugs and the new shield it is much, much quieter. much less wind noise as it deflects wind off the top of my helmet, instead of under my chin like the stock screen did. can’t wait for a really nice day to take a spin out to the mountains, probably another few weeks before i can safely do that without the possibility of getting stranded in snow.

this years starting odometer - 10,580 kilometres, this summer’s goal is 10,000+ kilometres. i have a trip planned to washington and one to saskatchewan, possibly via montana, in july, so those will help.
