murphy’s laws

if you are anxiously awaiting an outcome, it’ll take much longer than you anticipated. not sure exactly how it works but everytime i’ve waiting for my graded work to be handed back in class, mine is always on the bottom of the pile and nearly last to be handed back.

really odd. i sit waiting, thinking, “oh yeah, i’m sure i did well” and waiting, then the brain starts re-evaluating all the possible outcomes - “maybe it got lost”, “maybe mine isn’t graded”, “maybe i forgot to put my name on the work”, etc. but eventually, you hear the magical tones of your name being called and there it is, your work.

another murphy’s law applies to taking the bus. if you think you’re just going to catch the bus at its assigned time, you’ll likely roll up just as the bus takes off. today i thought to myself, “i bet i’ll leave class with just enough time to catch the bus”. but then nature called so i was temporarily detoured. sure enough when i got to the stop the #73 was rolling off into the distance and i was faced with a 1/2 hour wait. luckily it was nice outside.

i remember watching the movie “what the bleep do we know” and it suggested that our feelings are able to influence not only beings around us but possibly physical objects. wonder if thinking about something really has any affect on the actual outcome, the whole mind over matter proposition. if we think something will happen, is it any more likely to occur?

think of starting a rumour. by simply starting the wheels in motion often times rumours actually become true, a self-fulfilling prophecy. expect the outcome and the expected actually occurs, confirming what you originally expected.

or maybe we seek answers in things that are really beyond our control and that are totally, and completely random.

still it’s much more fun to think that some odd set of laws explains why things ‘almost’ work out for us.
