organized chaos

i’ve recently watched a PBS show about how things seemingly random at a glance when watched over numerous repetitions or over longer periods of time exhibit patterns. they are only random because our senses limit us to see what’s there now, rather than what is there over some defined (usually long) period.

fascinating in that even chaos or chaotic events eventually end up being patterned, which is also interesting in that nothing is completely random.

they showed eddies in water and over long periods of time random flows of water show the same patterns.

i was walking through the crowded halls of the university the other day thinking how clever our brains are to have so many things to take in, organize and right our path so we can navigate through the hundreds of approaching people in the hallways - and yet it’s totally hidden beneath the surface - subconscious. making your way through a seemingly random and chaotic situation without the least amount of actual conscious thought. we are actually able to organize chaos.
