zorro the gay blade
someone, a zorro-like or perhaps don quixote-like figure, has been venturing to and fro around campus and using, what i’d guess, is a utility knife to remove all corporate advertising around the university.
it’s fairly easy to see that it’s the same person or group as each has been skillfully carved away in the same box-like pattern.
at an act of civil disobedience or vandalism? i’m inclined to support the civil disobedience stance. this is a tax supported building designed for the purposes of education not a huge billboard for corporations to exploit a captive audience.
it appears that provincial funding and tuition are not enough, university is now just another business. i think it’s time to realize that educational fees have increased constantly over the past 20 years that i’ve been taking classes and yet there’s always a shortfall of funding. i think this speaks volumes about the waste at the administrative level and built-in inefficiencies in the system. yet another government institution that is bloated and in desperate need of a good hard workout - time to get fit, trim and agile like private corporations. put the money into instruction, instructional technology and improving day-to-day operations - get rid of the fence-sitters and dog-riders who are cruising to retirement - cut the dead-weight and right the ship.
it’s a pretty slippery slope once you allow advertising in the halls, then someone will suggest marketing in the classrooms, specially placed adverts in content and so on. get them out now, let education be about education and not product placement.
travel on zorro, continue the mark of the gay blade - maybe they’ll get the hint, and it won’t be a quixotic joust against the marketing windmills.
