a nice day for a riot
in my gender history class we got off on a strange tangent about civil disobedience and the weather.
the general theory is that riots, public uprisings and most successful attempts at war occur on ‘nice’ days - weather-wise that is. apparently a lot of these events are called off due to poor weather.
there has been mention that errors in the battle of waterloo were due to inclement weather, high humidity and it’s affect on napoleon’s inflamed hemorrhoids.
a recent rally staged by a christain fundamentalist group was mostly uneventful and unsuccessful since it was cold and snowy, and their event was outside.
i mentioned it would be a great premise for a novel - a bunch of activists waiting for ‘their day’, good weather and a change to revolt against, well, whatever - “a nice day for a riot”.
