obsession with connection

apparently people can’t be away from their phone, specifically their cellphone for any length of time. i would have thought that being in class or in your car you’d be “free” from interruption.

modern life means being accessible 24 hours a day. you can’t escape communication, nor does it seem that anyone wants to. walking in the park with your dog, walking between classes, in classes, in the car (often while driving).

i’ve had numerous close calls and encounters on my motorbike while people blissfully drive away with little or no regard for those around them while talking on their phone. what is the emergency? what’s so important that a phone call can’t wait a few minutes until you stop. there’s a constant state of urgency – north americans have no patience for waiting, everything is now. we’ve developed an eight second attention span, we’ve reverted to childhood – we want what we want, now.
in my opinion, people use them as distractions – they are never alone, they never have to think on their own – they always have a companion, a clever distration from real life. constantly being somewhere else means we don’t have to really be where we are – it’s a vehicle for escapism.
