why university is cooler as a 30+ year old

my first week of school and directly into the fire.

took what’s referred to as a block week class - one university class in one week. all the content all the work but in a 40 hour class. holy shit. 4 papers and an exam in 5 class. a maelstrom of activity.

honestly, i didn’t think i was going to make it. self-doubt, using skills that lay dormant for the better part of 10 years since my last uni class. “can i still do this?”

18 hour days, and lots of expletives and head scratching, but i’ve successfully broken the cycle start from my last career. it can’t get any more challenging than this.

when i’ve returned this time i have a new perspective, experience and a background of knowledge. it’s seeming a lot more interesting, a lot more second nature. it’s less about the changes associated with becoming an adult like the younger students, it’s really only about learning and self-development this time around.

i thought that being 35 would be no big deal in university. i don’t stand out as a “dinosaur” but the experiences that other students are going through in their late teens and early twenties is water long ago passed under my bridge. it’s kinda gut-wrenching seeing the growth and early adult pains associated with finding out who “you are” and the uncomfortable and uneasy feelings on their faces as they journey into their self-discovery. but i can relate on another level since i’m re-establishing my own sense of self.

technology has totally changed the experience. cellphones and computer technology are dominant - everyone has them, and use them - even in class. people are constantly connected by telephone, text messaging, e-mail and the use of laptop computers. when i attended last, they were just installing web servers and teaching the use of e-mail - and only had a few small computer labs.

everything is wireless, turn on my laptop and i’m connected. the coolest part is being able to see other people’s itunes music libraries and listening to their music - anonymously. boy, like minds surely are here - it would be interesting to meet these people and see if my mental picture of someone with those musical tastes matches who they really are.

people haven’t been beaten down yet, there’s lot of life, enthusiasm and interest. what a breath of fresh air that is. people actually talk to each other, are interested in debating, challenging their perspectives. people are laughing, having fun, enjoying themselves - what a change from the cave-dweller civil servants i’ve spent my last three years inhabiting office space with.

more observations as the experience continues. my posts will be far more sporadic and less coherent - just “getting it out”.

part of my sociology class is getting out feelings and thoughts as they come unedited, then trying to find the roots from things associated with society. also, analyzing ones dreams. should be interesting…
