Excuse me, do you work here?

not sure what’s going on lately but everywhere i go i seem to be a fond of reference, or look like i work at the businesses/establishment i’m in.

case in point - i spent 1/2 an hour answering questions about soldering jewelry at a home depot. i was looking for a finish nailer for my compressor at home when a woman was asking about making jewelry with brazing fuels. the home depot employee turned to me mid-sentence and asked if i could answer her questions. huh? um, yeah. but, um, i don’t work here. no problem, happy to help someone out but - one of us is being paid to answer questions and it wasn’t me.

another hardware store, different day. i’m cruising the tool isle looking for a drill bit or two for a project. an older gent stops me - “excuse me, do you know anything about drill bits?”. i’m wearing my grubby renovation clothes covered in crap from working on our house. “i’m trying to drill into a steel axle on a model, will this bit work?” about 5 minutes later and we had him set up with the proper bit for the job.

then i’m at the university, fixing up final registration details. wheel up on my motorcycle, take of my helmet and gear. i’m in a t-shirt and shorts and someone stops me to ask if i work at the university and could help with his parking dilemma. again, t-shirt, shorts and carrying a motorcycle helmet. do i work here, um, no.

maybe i just look approachable and people need someone, anyone to help them out of a predicament. glad to help, but in future try someone wearing the uniform of an employee. says a lot about the shitty customer service people have become used to.
