preparing the ol’ viffer for spring

well, it’s been nearly two years since i wiped out my motorcycle. it took nearly 6 months for my knees and ankles to heal, followed shortly by a complete remodelling of all my ligaments - ie. tore all the ligaments in my right knee playing hockey last march (2005). so needless to say i haven’t had the physical capacity to do my summer hobby of 1200 kilometre rides.

my poor l’il 1984 vf500f Honda Interceptor was quite a bit worse for wear. wrecked the fairing, tank, bent the mount bracket for all the instruments, bent the tailpipe, broke off all the lights, clutch line, fender, etc. etc. needless to say there were a “few” repairs.

enter eBay to the rescue, a godsend for finding old things for old things. i’ve found all the parts and then some and i’m currently in the process of putting it back together.

so far the most expensive “parts” are the decals like the honda logo and the “stickers” that put a cool v-shape on the front fairing (almost 250 USD for the little buggers), and the fairing bolts which were a ridiculour 5.78 CAD each (times 8) from Honda, ouch! i have a local graphics shop and paint/bodywork guy putting it all back together.

List of repairs to date

-new chain and sprockets
-new choke cable and assembly
-new lights
-new mufflers
-new tires
-cleaned petcock - turns off fuel/switch - not what i do by myself in the garage ;)
-cleaned carbs
-new fork seals and gaskets
-new fairing support (powder coated)
-repaired speedo and mount

the bike is 22 years old and there are fewer around by the year. when i was 14 years old i used to sit in the library and read all the motorcycle magazines, extolling the virtues of what was then the most advanced bike in production by any company. i’ll continue to provide updates for those interested. see photos below for progress -
