tunes that should likely be in your collection - 2005
need to refresh your music collection. still mulling over “karma chameleon”. we’ll kidlets here are my suggestions for best albums of 2005 in no particular order
“My Apologies to the Queen Mary” - Wolf Parade - Low-fi, catchy lyrics, catchy simple pop tunes but not in a saccharin-sweet way. dirty guitars and drums, with the occasional bontempi-esque organ
“Get Behind Me Satan” - White Stripes - like they need any more fanfare. how many ways can two or three instruments be arranged and still sound like rock, i mean blues, i mean ragtime piano.
“Howl Howl Gaff Gaff” - Shout Out Louds - See above description for Wolf Parade as it applies here too. Damn we Canadians are getting good at low-fi pop.
“12 Songs” - Neil Diamond - Okay, so i’m a kid of the 70s and 80s, but damn he really is a good songwriter, and can Rick Rubin do no wrong with getting the best out of artists. These are heartfelt, real songs that’ll grab you and reel you in.
“Lost and Found” - Mudvayne - Ummm, i’m no teenager, but this still raises my ire and makes me want to grab something and shake it or break it. Great guitar work, good lyrics, pure raw emotion.
“Aha Shake Heartbreak” - Kings of Leon - You know what. It’s great when a band really defies convention and comparison. These guys are tough to pigeon-hole. Rocky, pop with bluesy roots and what seems like a dash of Hispanic influence, although to be honest i know less than jack about the band - that’s just what it sounds like.
“Howl” - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Add equal parts of slide guitar, bluesy low-fi guitar, fantastic lyrics and unique almost Marc Bolan-esque sounds. It’ll remind you of T-Rex but wanders off into new ground.
and last but definitely not least
“In Your Honor” - The Foo Fighters - going ten years strong and arguably one of the best rock and roll bands out there. some great emotional light songs and some kick’em in the nuts rockers. really my favorite album of the year.
these are the ones that are always zeros and ones pumping through my ipod and home stereo. worth a listen. they are all on the itunes music store. happy listening.
