changing the way you watch TV
i’ve been fortunate enough to upgrade to newer television technology - a plasma display and a DVR (digital video recorder). a big step up from my 10 year old VCR (which has served me well) and a 21″ TV.
it’s interesting to see the effect that changing to the new technology has had on my viewing habits. i seek out more content produced in high definition, which really is quite nascent and is still slowly being adopted in canada. but man, what a difference between standard NTSC broadcasting and high definition - literally night and day.
and with the DVR we’re no longer bound by the scheduling of old school television programming. watch what you want when you want. tape all the episodes of jon stewart or the trailer park boys and watch them at your convenience, or what’s really cool - watch one you’ve recorded and “tape” two others while the machine is playing the one you’ve recorded. i just about fell out of my chair - record two and watch the recorded one at the same time - sweet jesus!
or miss a few seconds, rewind a few seconds then watch real-time tv delayed and played back at your convenience, say 10 minutes behind, so you can forward through commercials. hey advertisers, better change your marketing since when this technology is adopted by mainstream viewers we’ll all be zipping past your silly ads.
i can’t help but call it taping - “taping” so used to the old VCR and analog technology. and the digital guide and recording technology is monkey-proof - find your show, hit record and it does the rest, no more setting clocks, daylight savings, etc - it just works.
now if i could just “tape” life and only play back the parts that are interesting, at my convenience, while forwarding past the rest of life’s “advertising”.

I call it ‘taping’, too. No matter. It kicks ass either way.
