portable video through the new ipod

apple released an updated version of the ipod that now supports video. it’s a natural progression that has been expected for sometime, regardless of apple ceo’s denial that they were working towards such a player.

the intial response is “cool”, but realistically there are few opportunities to use such a device in a real world setting.

but like many other technologies that apple has initiated it’s likely a device ahead of it’s time – ala tcp/ip stack and networking, firewire, wireless access, etc.

i think that this new technology and support through itunes is the first big step towards licensing content of all types, digitally, from a common source. tv programs, video, music all from one store online and on demand. playing music videos seems to me like a demo of how the technology can work but i’m sure it will soon produce hundreds of titles of television content and movies for download. look at the BBC, currently archiving all of their programs into digital format, ALL content in digital format, regardless of when it was produced.

won’t be long before television and movie execs realise the enormous opportunity this technology presents.

also worth a read is icringely, and his comments from january this year about technology and content distribution http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20050127.html
