sting of gasoline prices

should it come to anyone’s surprise that oil companies are taking advantage of a bad situation - hurricane katrina. blaming low supply as a factor for increasing prices north america wide for gasoline prices. apparently nearly 500 million barrels are socked away in texas for a situation just like this - more than enough to make up for the “shortfall” by decreased or halted production in the gulf of mexico. yet, they still feel it necessary to stick it to consumers in what amounts to 10-20 cent/litre increases in less than two days.

but frankly, i don’t see transportation in an automobile as a right, or anything that should be guaranteed. it’s something we take for granted as north americans. and for the big fat idiots that had to keep up with the jonses and buy big fat stupid vehicles that are not fuel efficient i say - tough noughies. i don’t feel sorry for you, maybe when gasoline hits 1.50/litre people will re-examine their driving habits, and maybe, just maybe, municipalities in canada will start building better public transportation systems.

this is oddly reminiscent of the 1970s oil shortage. those that don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
