the democracy of democracy
must admit, it was somewhat fascinating and horrifying to watch a web feed on cbc.ca about the vote for “confidence” in the canadian parliament yesterday.
an actual -”stand and be counted” vote, each of the 300+ MPs actually stand and are physically counted for the vote. talk about an antiquated system, can’t they use some electronic means, or drop a ballot. the parliamentary system seems hopelessly unable to deal with the issues of modern life. people can vote for an “american idol” in a land of 300 million people but we can’t count a simple vote without physical head counts.
it was like watching a sporting event with play-by-play of what was happening, with colour commentary on the significance of each move. only the stakes are national unity and our national image - with little regard paid by any of the parties.
whatever belinda stronach’s motivation i’m glad she plays for the “other team” now. canada comes closer and closer to having to really deal with quebec separation. and sorry, the new conservative party siding with the bloq quebecois to gain influence is completely unacceptable. i can’t see how anyone can support a position that ultimately sides with a group trying to separate from canada. plus, where’s the platform stevo harper? you’ve had nothing to say and no goals, only that you oppose the liberals - take a stand. he looked like a child that was last picked in a game of dodgeball with his classmates, and when picked only can say - “well, it’s okay i hate you all anyway and i’ll get first pick soon”.
i think we should have another referendum, once and for all. quebec, i’m all for you getting what you want, i’m not sure i understand what it is though. you have your own law (french), signs and everything in both languages, and are treated like a spoiled only child even though you have 9 provincial siblings. i think it’s time to settle things once and for all - piss or get off the pot. we’ve put up with the uncertainty for too long - if you win the referendum you’re out and it’s settled. if you lose that’s it - no more referendums, you’re part of canada.
and now that they’ve got “confidence” in the gov’t and parliament (not the citizens, the politicians), let’s see some actual work. the politicians have pissed away an entire year and haven’t even settled a budget or implemented any of their promises. let’s get started. another election isn’t going to solve the issue of every politician with their thumb in their ass, pull it out, let’s get going.
unfortunately, i’m sure this is only one of many challenges of the minority gov’t.
the system has broken down. voters views are so fractured by ideology and by regionalism, i don’t think we’ll see a majority gov’t again for a while. so we’re stuck in a process of minority leaders wasting all their time justifying their mandate as the leading party. not very productive.
