Stockholm Syndrome - Our Lives with Computers

Published by superfunkomatic at Apr 22, 05 | 6:52 pm under computer geekery

what an interesting revelation, but how true. what other technology would consistently piss us off to such great lengths, and yet leave us begging for more. for me i started on the “dark” side of computers with windows 3.1 and DOS and never really had a grasp of what was going on. i dabbled with windows 95 when i was introduced to the macintosh OS and haven’t looked back.

here’s a recent conversation with a friend - “installed a video card, and nothing is working”, “installed the SP2 update for windows xp and now my e-mail won’t accept attachments”, “i’ve never run those patches that annoyingly flash on my screen all the time, are they important? oh and i have like 99% of my memory in use with no programs open”

if our TV created this much extra work and grief we would drop 5 yards and punt it into the trash bin. but frequently people say, i’ll just buy a newer computer, i’m sure that’ll fix it. the logic defies me.

machines are supposed to do what we want, when we want it, to save us time for fun things. why in haedes would anyone want to spend their fun time looking at the blue screen of death.

i work with techies on a daily basis that apply 3-4 weekly patches to enterprise (big) computers. i ask - is that normal? isn’t their an alternative?

they won’t even consider and alternative. i find that remarkable, but i’d also like to know what universities teach computer science students, or the jonestown punch they provide. thus the syndrome - the one you try to love so much, with all your effort and heart, continues to punch your fucking lights out. do you go back for another round? obviously one of the most confounding things i’ve ever come across. the love for something that continually makes your life miserable. i wonder at what juncture people actually say - “this is fucking ridiculous, i’m stopping this behavior now”.
