too much time?
well to be honest i’m not normally one to sit idle for long (read for more than a few minutes). the last few years i’ve been involved in minor hockey, worked part-time and full-time simultaneously, volunteered for an animal shelter and renovated my house. at the time i never thought i was that busy. over the past few months i’ve made a conscious effort to slow down - which has brought about a strange thing - what to do with time?
i still play sports (hockey, canada’s greatest export to the world), and i still take on small web development projects outside work but now i realize likely like most people i need to develop productive things to do with my spare time.
i work in an environment (gov’t organization) where many are approaching retirement (the boomers, god bless ‘em) and are unprepared for the abundance of freedom they will soon experience. i think in today’s north american society we spend too much time rushing and not enough thinking or developing personally.
it’s easy to pick up a six pack and some chips and watch trash on tv, but like most things in life hobbytime requires more effort. so back to the books so to speak - reading. and since i pretty much wrote off my motorcycle last summer (photos- http://www.toolbarmedia.com/photos/motorbike_wipeout_2004/) i have now taken up motorcycle mechanics, as well as becoming my own physio-therapist (remember minus 30 and 34 year old joints after a crash don’t mix well). so i’m well on my road to self-fulfilment and development.
wonder if i’ll reach a point where i have too many outside interests and have to scale them back. is there a chance the things to occupy my time will occupy too much time. now that’s a paradox.
